What is G.metro?

With the emergence of 5G comes the need for access networks to support significantly higher-speed services with minimal extra equipment, cost and complexity. While time-division multiplexing passive optical network (TDM PON) solutions can provide increased connection speeds, they lack the security, low-latency and scalability that 5G requires. All of this changes with G.metro. The use of small, pluggable devices means DWDM can be pushed further out into the access and backhaul network. The result: operators can easily and efficiently deliver higher-capacity services to a greater number of end-users. Speed and security in the last mile
G.metro uses tunable, optical network units (ONUs) to increase capacity in access and backhaul networks. A typical communication across this infrastructure begins at the central office. An optical line terminal sends multi-wavelength traffic downstream through a length of fiber. The optical wavelengths are demultiplexed at a passive filter device and then separated into individual streams. Those streams then get forwarded onward to edge-based transceiver devices, ONUs, which automatically tune their transmitters to the appropriate upstream wavelength. From this point, data packets can be efficiently and securely exchanged between central office and the remote sites at speeds of 10Gbit/s and beyond.
