Klaus Grobe talks WDM growth and sustainability at OFC
Session to discuss networking energy efficiency and how ICT emissions are over-compensated by carbon reduction in other industries
- Speaker: Klaus Grobe, director global sustainability, ADVA
- Topics: Growth and sustainability of WDM
- When: Wednesday, March 9, 2 p.m. PST
- Where: OFC, The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition, San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, California, USA and virtual conference: https://www.ofcconference.org/en-us/home/registration/
Internet growth is driving an exponential increase in the energy consumption of WDM systems. But, while it’s important to minimize total lifetime carbon emissions by replacing WDM systems with more efficient next-generation technology, these emissions are heavily over-compensated by the transformative power of ICT. The greening by ICT effect has significant potential to help decarbonize other industries, such as transport, energy, agriculture, waste disposal and finance. The more other sectors embrace digitization, the more sustainable they become.
In this session, Klaus Grobe will explain how improvements in WDM energy efficiency could be slowing down, but also how the sector’s growing emissions could be offset by its unique potential to make other industries truly sustainable.
