Telecom Infra Project

A new collaborative approach

ADVA has always been committed to openness. Our belief in collaboration and the value of multi-vendor environments is why we’ve been a key player in the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) right from the start. Since its inception in 2016, we’ve been driving the joint engineering initiative, working alongside operators, infrastructure providers, system integrators, research institutes and other technology companies to accelerate the pace of innovation. Together with our TIP partners, we’ve made enormous progress with reimagining traditional approaches to building and deploying telecom network infrastructure.

Open opportunities

TIP members work together to contribute designs in the strategic areas — access, backhaul, and core and management — applying the Open Compute Project models of openness and disaggregation to propel innovation forward. Within the backhaul area is TIP’s Open Optical & Packet Transport (OOPT) group, where we’ve played a key role from day one. This collaboration works on the definition of open technologies, architectures and interfaces in optical and IP networking. It focuses on different parts of the transport architecture, including optical transponders, line systems, IP access devices, open APIs and network simulation and planning tools.

Innovating together

Within the OOPT group, our team participates in the sub groups Controls, Information Models & APIs (CIMA) and Disaggregated Cell Site Gateways (DCSG), helping to drive disaggregated technologies and multi-vendor implementations towards real-world deployment. We also contribute to the access area as a member of the vRAN Fronthaul subgroup, developing virtualized RAN solutions that can be deployed and operated over non-ideal fronthaul. What’s more, we also play a role in the third area, helping to apply AI and machine learning to reducing the cost of planning, operating and maintaining telecommunication networks.

Disaggregated cell site gateways

The value of openness and interoperability is particularly significant in 5G mobile networks due to the enormous volume of cell site gateway devices required. From day one, we’ve been working with our TIP partners to bring the power of openness and dynamic specialization to this space ...

Disaggregated optical systems

The need for scalable, flexible DCI infrastructure has never been greater. At ADVA, we believe this can be achieved through avoiding vendor lock-in and enabling choice of best-of-breed hardware and software. As part of our commitment to open ecosystems, we drove Voyager ...

Controls, information models and APIs

Managing and controlling open and disaggregated networks is a key challenge, next to system integration. Controls, Information Models and APIs (CIMA) is the subgroup within TIP’s Open Optical and Packet Transport group in charge of defining architectures ...
