Seamless and super-fast

The revolution is well underway with the fifth generation of mobile networks pushing speed, capacity, coverage and latency to whole new levels. Early adopters are seeing download speeds 10 times faster than 4G. What’s more, 5G cell towers can handle hundreds of times the number of unique devices, meaning overloading and loss of signal should soon be things of the past. Also, with latency reduction high on the agenda, a new world of augmented and virtual reality applications opens up. Right at the heart of this drive towards the 5G future is optical networking. With spectrum capacity and requirements that far exceed practical limits of copper and microwave implementations, fiber is a key asset and recent innovation is boosting spectrum utilization further than ever seemed possible. New ultra-precise synchronization technology is another vital component for delivering 5G services, as is innovation in edge compute, network automation and AI.

A new breed of transport network

Building 5G infrastructure involves new levels of high-capacity connectivity, compute power at the edge and ultra-precise network timing. The new generation of mobile connectivity is having an enormous impact on fronthaul and backhaul infrastructure, putting huge demands on transport networks. That’s why our auto-tune (G.metro) innovation is key to 5G success. It offers the low capex/opex, low latency and scalability that 5G requires. What’s more, with our compact and versatile edge demarcation technology, we’re leading the industry in open and programmable small cell solutions that perform multiple essential functions, including multi-layer Carrier Ethernet and IP integration, service lifecycle management and precise, assured distribution of phase and frequency synchronization.

 

Get ready for the new standard

5G doesn’t stop with Release 15. 3GPP Release 16 and 17 are also in planning, opening up features such as improved RAN efficiency, campus networks, V2X, and specific features relating to positioning accuracy and low latency. Openness, collaboration and standardization will be essential components for successful 5G deployments. As legacy networks must become more efficient and scalable to deliver 5G bandwidth, we’ve collaborated with our partners to advance new X-Haul technologies. X-Haul uses software and scalable hardware to merge fronthaul and backhaul, creating a faster and more agile network architecture that can be scaled indefinitely. Also key is the trend towards converged enterprise and mobile networks, driving the adoption of edge compute, synchronization and hardware capabilities into the enterprise to enable private, campus and neutral host networks. What’s more, applications that use ultra-reliable low latency communications (uRLLC) over a variety of new use cases are emerging. Our solutions provide the timing assurance and compute capabilities to enable uRLLC in any local enterprise network.
